Dear Colleagues,

I would like to inform you that WWF launched a world-wide online petition to call on dam developer Mega First Corporation Berhad to suspend construction of the Don Sahong dam to promote a free and healthy Mekong River, for Nature, for wildlife, and for our future generations.

WWF- Cambodia urge you to sign the online petition and support WWF's efforts in protecting the Mekong River and saving the Mekong River's Irrawaddy Dolphin from extinction.

Please do share this with your family, friends, and networks. We will run the petition through to mid-August and our target is 50,000 signatures. The online petition will be supported by efforts on the ground in Cambodia to secure signatures from impacted communities and supporting civil society organisations.

________

More about the Don Sahong Dam & Its Impacts

As many of you may already know, the Don Sahong hydropower dam is situated only 1 km away from the Cambodia-Laos border on the Mekong mainstream in southern Laos. The proposed dam site is right above the dolphins' core habitat, which stretches for 190-km from Siphandone to Kratie. If built, this dam will threaten the Mekong River's critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins with extinction.

The dam's destruction goes beyond dolphins. The Don Sahong dam threatens to block the most critical fish migration channel, putting at risk the world's most productive inland fisheries, and the livelihoods of 60 million people living in the Lower Mekong Basin, including Cambodians.

Construction of the Don Sahong dam will lead to wide-ranging consequences. These include the loss of our national heritage and pride (the Mekong River's Irrawaddy dolphins and stunning biodiversity in Cambodia) and negative impacts on Cambodia's food security and community livelihoods, with a potential loss of up to 30% of freshwater fishery.
