In 2018, WARECOD will continue to develop local knowledge research programs applying the Thaibaan method in the Mekong Delta.


People from Jang Lanh village, Krong Na commune, Buon Don district, Dak Lak province have used the water directly from the Srepok River for all their family activities. In recent years, due to impacts of hydropower projects, the Srepok River flowing into the village has become stagnant, combined with the waste from production activities of the people on both sides of the river, that important water source becomes pollution. Since 2012, WARECOD has supported local people to conduct local knowledge research (Thaibaan) in three communes in the flooding area of An Giang and Dong Thap provinces in Vietnam. The most important outcome of this research has been that villagers have gained the confidence to participate in dialogues with authorities, and have a new willingness to share their findings and ideas with other communities regarding the conservation and protection of water resources, and associated ecosystem services. As discussions continue, the future of one of the world’s greatest rivers is as bleak as ever.

Project" Impacts of Khau Ca Species and Habitat Conservation Area Establishment on the Livelihoods of Local People - An assessment from the community perspective" was supported by Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (EPF) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and implemented by the Center for Conservation and Development of Water Resources (WARECOD) with cooperation of the People's Committee of Bac Me District, Minh Son Commune People's Committee of Bac Me district from April to December 2016.

In the Mekong Delta, declining fish catch is the most noticeable symptom of environmental changes that are threatening traditional livelihoods. A WLE Greater Mekong project, working with local institutions, has been raising awareness of the issues causing this decline and is now detecting grass-roots desire to change livelihood systems as people look to return their ecosystems to better health.

During the second year of the project MK26 - River food system from local people’s perspectives in the Mekong delta, local knowledge research groups will be established in the Bac Lieu province.

In two days August 19th and 20th 2015, WARECOD coordinated with Bac Me district’s Judicial Devision to organize the training on laws and policies related to environment. The participants were representatives of Na Pong, Na Bo villages (Giap Trung commune) and Bo Cung village (Yen Phu town).

In 2015, WARECOD continues to implement the local knowledge research in a project “River food system from local people’s perspectives in the Mekong delta” through new methods.


With the aim of promoting co-management of fisheries resources in Tuyen Quang hydropower reservoir, on May 14th 2015 in Tuyen Quang province, the Center of Water Resources Conservation and Development (WARECOD) and Na Hang District People's Committee (DPC) , Tuyen Quang province jointly held the project opening workshop “Enhancing Co-management towards Sustainable Aquatic Resources in Tuyen Quang Province”. The implementation of the project is playing an important part in raising community’s awareness and fostering more sustainably the co-management model of fisheries resources in the area.
