In early March 2019, the Center for Water Resources Conservation and Development organized a field trip to research local knowledge, combined with propaganda on environmental protection issues in the context of climate change in the Mekong Delta river

The study was conducted in Long Phu commune, Soc Trang province and Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai district, Tra Vinh province.

The awareness-raising training and local knowledge research were conducted at the cultural house of Muoi Chien hamlet, Long Phu commune and the cultural house of Dong Thanh hamlet, Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai district, Tra Vinh province. The training sessions have the participation of district women union, Long Phu commune. The research in Tra Vinh focused mainly on shrimp farmers in Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai district, Tra Vinh province.

The study of local knowledge in Long Phu commune focuses on the assessment of ecosystems and water resources over time. The study focuses on local resource risks, as well as the direct and potential impacts affecting the life and productive activities of the community. In addition, the study also analyzed water pollution issues and mitigation measures to develop a plan to increase community participation in water environment monitoring.

In Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai district, Tra Vinh province, the research team focused mainly on the issue of industrial shrimp farming and its negative impacts on the local water environment. Industrial shrimp farming is inherently dangerous to destroy the ecological environment, but farmers lack knowledge, encounter many failures and seriously affect the environment. Through events to protect the environment, WARECOD wishes to build a foundation for local people to build community initiatives in water resources governance.

Climate change in the Mekong Delta is a vital issue for not only local people, as production in the Mekong Delta contributes significantly to the economic development of Vietnam.
