On May 24th 2013, Center for Water Resources Conservation and Development (WARECOD) coordinated with Bao Lam’s People Committee to hold the program “Local communication event on climate change and water resources”. This activity belongs to the Local knowledge research (Thai Baan) of the project “Promoting Local Adaptation of the Lo - Gam River Basin’s Water Management to Climate Change in the mountainous area of the North Vietnam” funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The purpose of this activity is to raise public awareness of Climate Change and its influence on the water resources and to call for the participation of the community in protecting and using the water resources in a proper way.

During the event, leaders of Bao Lam’s People Committee and WARECOD’s representatives have delivered a short speech on the importance of water to production and people’s daily life, the real situation of lacking water faced by people in the district, especially the Hmong and Dao ethnic minority living along the slopes of high mountains, and encouraged the community to plant trees in order for treeless hills to be covered, protect and utilize water resources properly.

This program had a lot of activities aimed at the above objectives with local researchers from Che Pen village, Pac Miau town, and Pac Pha village, Ly Bon commune, Bao Lam district as the core participants of the program. These researchers participated in various activities such as play-acting about the water scarcity, wide-spreading information about the role of individuals in the community towards water resources protection, giving self-composed performances on the impacts of climate change on people’s life and reasons for water scarcity, joining cooking competition, etc. “The people here have never had chance to be informed about climate change as well as had chance to play-act about the impacts of climate change on their life like this before”, said La Hong Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the district.

Notably, this cultural event also attracted the attention of a lot of people in the district. Many people came early to watch and support for the event. Also, many participated in some games such as “Pour water into the bottles”, supported for the plays, the cooking competition, and other performances in the program.

The program “Local communication event on climate change and water resources” has been organized successfully as expected. This is the base for WARECOD to continue its cooperation with Bao Lam’s People Committee in implementing the next activities.
